GMAP is a research group at CNRM (National Centre for Meteorological Research) affiliated with Météo-France and CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research). GMAP develops numerical forecasting software packages for Météo-France.
The OBS team is in charge of the assimilation of observations in the global and regional NWP models of Météo-France.
The position offered is part of the European CICONIA‑MET project, which aims to support and contribute to the European Union’s ambition of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. In this perspective, and in line with the aviation sector’s commitment to reduce the climate impact of air transport, new services are required to help air traffic optimise flight paths and reduce the formation of contrails. To this end, it is necessary to improve the forecasting of ice‑supersaturated regions (ISSRs) in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models.
Within the previous CICONIA project (Arriolabengoa et al., 2025), recent advances in the cloud scheme of Météo‑France’s global NWP model ARPEGE have enabled better prediction of these ice‑supersaturated regions. However, further improvements are still needed to refine their forecasts, particularly by working on the initial conditions (called analyses). Indeed, at present very few humidity‑sensitive observations are assimilated in the Upper Troposphere–Lower Stratosphere (UTLS).
Consequently, the first objective of this project is to advance the assimilation of humidity‑sensitive data (both in‑situ and satellite) in the UTLS within ARPEGE. The second objective is to assess how a fleet of aircraft equipped with humidity sensors could contribute to improving ARPEGE analyses and forecasts in ice‑supersaturated regions. This work will also help inform decisions regarding future deployment scenarios for onboard humidity sensors on aircraft.

The proposed work is organized around two main phases:
1. Improving the assimilation of humidity observations in ARPEGE
The aim is to assess the contribution of new observations—UTLS radiosondes, airborne measurements, and data from the next‑generation of European satellites IASI‑NG and/or IRS—which are currently little or not assimilated at all in the UTLS. These observations will be assimilated in the ARPEGE 4‑D‑Var system (Bouyssel et al. 2002). If the results are not satisfactory, the assimilation parameters (observation and background error statistics, bias correction, etc.) will be adjusted. This step may also lead to changes in the assimilation criteria used in Météo‑France’s operational chain for the assimilation of humidity observations in the UTLS.

2. Evaluating the contribution of a fleet of aircraft equipped with humidity sensors
Once the first phase—tuning the humidity‑observation assimilation parameters—is completed, the second part of the project will focus on assessing whether equipping a fleet of aircraft with humidity sensors could improve forecasts, especially in regions prone to contrail formation. For this purpose an ensemble‑based method, called Ensemble of Data Assimilation (EDA), will be used (see, for example, Sasso et al. 2025). In this approach, synthetic aircraft observations are assimilated together with the operational observations already ingested by the ARPEGE Ensemble Assimilation system (AEARP). The added value of these new observations will be evaluated by their ability to reduce short‑range forecast uncertainties.

The second phase will be divided into several tasks:
* Simulation of airborne humidity observations under various scenarios (e.g., different aircraft‑fleet densities, sensor sensitivities).
* Assimilation of these synthetic observations into the ARPEGE ensemble assimilation system (AEARP).
* Impact assessment of the new observations on uncertainty reduction, with inter‑comparison of the different scenarios over large geographic domains and altitude layers. The studies will be carried out for both a winter and a summer period.

Profil recherché

* Experience in remote sensing and/or data assimilation is required. Strong skills in a programming language such as Fortran or Python, as well as in handling large volumes of data, are also required.
* Knowledge of meteorology or numerical weather prediction is desirable.
* The candidate must demonstrate scientific curiosity, autonomy, teamwork skills, responsiveness, analytical abilities, and rigor in interpreting and presenting results. They must be able to report regularly on their work to the project team.
* The candidate must also be proficient in English (both written and spoken).
